Reach for bass saxophone, voice, and optional video
A .pdf score of Reach for bass saxophone, voice, and optional video.
Instrumentation & Setup
Reach
For bass saxophone and voice
Reach is scored for bass saxophone and voice. The vocal line is intentionally flexible and may be adapted to suit the performer’s range and timbre; performers are encouraged to adjust octave, vowel color, or phonetic content as needed to maintain musical intent. Circular breathing must be used to connect the saxophone part, and the pitch on the bass saxophone must remain as notated. Potential fingerings are notated for the saxophone, and the piece was composed on a Selmer Series II bass. However, these fingerings will not be possible on all bass saxophones, and the performer is encouraged to find fingerings that work on their instrument.
Amplification
The piece can be performed with or without amplification. However, I find that the overall effect is normally best served with amplification of both the saxophonist and vocalist. The bass saxophone should be amplified with a microphone placed inside, on, or near the bell. A moderate to heavy setting on a compressor is recommended to emphasize the resonance and subtle overtones of the instrument. Ensure the system allows for sufficient low-frequency response.
Optional Video
An optional video accompaniment is available and may be presented as a projected or screened element. A high-resolution download link is provided in the score package.
